Droplr - Drag and Drop File, Link, and Screenshot Sharing, It's Even Free for Your Own Domain

By

Droplr

Ever wish that you could just drag and drop a file or link to get a shortened URL? Tired of going to Bit.ly or TwitPic to share links and files? Ever just wish you could simply drag and drop anything and within seconds get a shortened URL straight to it? Maybe you'd just like to take screenshots or screen clippings and have them instantly uploaded.

Say hello to Droplr.

Simply install the Droplr desktop application and from then on, simply drag and drop anything you want to share to the small Droplr icon on your screen. Within seconds, a tiny URL will be on your clipboard, ready for you to share across any of your social networks.

URL Shortening

Droplr also shortens your URLs with their very, very tiny URL d.pr. Sharing a link is as simple as dragging and dropping it onto Droplr, and within seconds, the tiny URL is copied to your clipboard, ready for you to share.

Custom Domain Shortening

If you're not much of a fan of d.pr, you can also use your own (preferably short) domain with d.pr. Just like bitly.Pro, using your own custom domain is free. This is in stark contrast to a similar drag-and-drop sharing platform, CloudApp, which charges $45 per year or $5 per month to use your own domain.

Why pay when you can get the same thing, and more, like more storage and better multiple operating system support, for free?

Price

As I just mentioned, Droplr is completely and entirely free. Even if you use your own custom domain, you don't pay a dime. You get 1GB of storage, which is more than paying CloudApp customers get. Sharing everything is just a matter of dragging and dropping it on the Droplr icon.

How Droplr Works

It's a little hard to express just how convenient and easy Droplr is to use. For that reason, I have included a video to the right which shows Droplr in use on a Mac. As you can see, it literally is just as simple as dragging and dropping anything to the Droplr icon. A URL from your browsers address bar? Cool. A picture from your desktop? Amazing. A screenshot or screen clipping of your desktop? Just press the key.

Within seconds, anything you want to share can be uploaded and shortened by Droplr.

Other Alternatives

CloudApp

Cloud App is very much the same as Droplr, however, it doesn't have Windows support. In addition, the 3rd party Windows client is quite bad in comparison to the Droplr Windows client.

Using your own domain with CloudApp is supported, but at a price of $45 per year. Droplr, as mentioned before, allows you to use your own domain for free.

CloudApp, unlike Droplr, also has an iPhone application that you can find in the iTunes App Store.

CloudApp also has support for extensions, known as Raindrops. Third-party developers can extend the native CloudApp program to do just about anything they want.

Dropbox

Dropbox really doesn't allow you to very conveniently share files like the previous two. However, it does make sharing folders and files with other people, your other computers, your smartphone (Android, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Blackberry), and the web.

After creating a Dropbox account and installing their software, any files you place inside of your Dropbox will be synchronized to the cloud and to your other computers. You can also undelete files, right click them to share them and get a shortened URL, view revisions, and more.

Dropbox is free for 2GB of storage. Two paid options are available for additional storage. 50GB for $9.99 per month. 100GB for $19.99 per month.
