ESET NOD32 & Smart Security - High Performance Anti-Virus Software
By frantiic
ESET NOD32 & Smart Security
ESET is one of the lesser known anti-virus solutions that targets consumers and business that aim to achieve the highest security while maintaining the best performance possible. ESET creates the two fastest leading anti-virus solution, ESET NOD32 and ESET Smart Security. To the right is an ESET commercial. Below, you will find detailed comparisons between ESET and the leading alternatives in both security in performance.
Fast Performance
"The Best Overall Speed Performance"
- AV-Comparatives.org, 2008
ESET scans files faster to reduce lag
Why should your anti-virus software slow you down? Oh wait, it shouldn't! ESET scans files faster, so you wait less. On average, ESET only needs 32.5 milliseconds longer to scan a 1 MB file than a computer with no anti-virus.
Faster Boot Times
Did you know that your anti-virus can cause your computer to boot up slower than even the worst viruses? ESET is the fastest in its class, getting your computer up and running, securely, as fast as possible.
Superior Detection
"The Best Proactive On-demand Detection"
- AV-Comparatives.org, 2008
ESET NOD32 has never missed an In-the-Wild virus
"In-the-Wild" viruses are viruses that have been reported to the Wildlist Organization by at least two reporters. Due to ESET's proactive security, no other alternative comes close to ESET.
ESET protects you better against unknown threats
Thanks to ESET's ThreatSense advanced heuristics, frequent updates isn't the only way the be safe from new and upcoming threats. By detecting and neutralizing viruses earlier and more accurately, ESET closes the window by proactively identifying and stopping any and all malware that attempts to enter or run on your system.

ESET NOD32 vs ESET Smart Security
To the right, I have included a chart that compares ESET NOD32 and ESET Smart Security.
Which one do I choose?
The real question is: Do you need a firewall? Ask yourself the following questions.
Do you have a router? If you don't or you don't know, then you more than likely need ESET Smart Security.
Are you installing this software on a laptop? Will that laptop ever use public or shared wifi? If you answered yes (and I really mean ever), then I strongly, strongly suggest you get ESET Smart Security.
Do you ever play online games or download software, music, movies, or TV? If you answered yes, then it's probably a safe bet that a firewall would come in handy.
Do you use Microsoft Outlook? If so, then the antispam feature may come in handy. If you use Gmail or Google Apps, then you probably wont need that feature.

That's it!
I really hope this article helps enlighten you that there are better alternatives to the terribly sluggish AVG, Sophos, Norton, and others. I use ESET Smart Security, and I am thankful every day that my computer isn't bogged down by heavy software that barely protects me at all. Maybe ESET will make you just as satisfied!
Comments
Hi Staceie :) I actually have spent a few years in IT, and switching to ESET Smart Security was one of the best decisions we ever made. AVG is first and foremost a resource hog, it's terrible at detecting viruses, and frequently mis-categorizes legitimate programs as malicious (including the IT tool VNC).
If that's your cup of tea, then sure, AVG is fine. But why would you settle for "terrible" when there is "awesome" available? The 3rd party benchmarks I've provided show clearly enough that AVG is nothing to compare.
Another thing: ESET is only popular among really high-minded tech savvy people (really tech savvy, geeky people). Most people in IT (after having 3 years of experience in IT) do NOT fall in this category. They read manuals and call phone support. True tech savvy people do not do that. No offense to your friend, but he probably understands the various anti-virus competitors as well as I understand the atomic makeup of the epidermis.
But hey, don't take my word for it :) Look at the love they've been given:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESET_NOD32#Reception
From CNET:
"As far as reputations go, ESET's NOD32 is practically unimpeachable."
ESET Smart Security has something that many competitors lack: cleanest interface. A child can use it, it's just that simple. Another feature I was pleased by is the list of missing Windows updates (saw it on XP machine). Pretty useful for home users.
